With particular splendor, religious piety and the participation of hundreds of faithful Christians, the memory of the Holy Glory Great Martyr George the Victorious, was celebrated again this year in the Patriarchal Monastery of the same name in Old Cairo.
The “Second Rotunda of the East”, the God-walked Patriarchal Monastery of Old Cairo, is one of the most important monuments of Christianity. It was byilt on the foundations of the Old Fortress of Babylon in the broader region of Memphis which was the ancient capital of Lower Egypt.
On Thursday 2nd May 2019, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Parriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, officiated at Great Vespers and served the Divine Liturgy, together with His Eminence Nicodemos Metropolitan of Memphis, Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo, His Eminence Niphon Metropolitan of Pilousion and His Grace Theodoros Bishop of Babylon, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of St George Old Cairo.
Also present were His Excellency the Ambassador of Greece to Egypt Mr. Michael Diamesis, His Excellency the Consul of Greece Mr. Achilleas Bikis, the Secretary General and Head of the Churches and Merged Communities Mrs. Chrysnathe Skoufaridou, the Community Councilor and Leader of the 1st Scout Group Mr. Andreas Giosri and representatives of the Greek and Arabic speaking Communities.
Immediately afterwards the procession of the miraculous Holy Icon of the Great Martyr St George around the church too place, with the participation of crowds of pious pilgrims. The traditional monastic offering of refreshments then took place in the Throne Room.
