His Eminence Ignatios, Archbishop of Antananarivo and North Madagascar was born in 1951 in Corinth, where he completed his schooling. He holds a degree as a Foreman Mechanic. He also holds a degree from the Orthodox Theological Seminary ‘St Nicholas’ and from the Theological Faculty of the University of Thessaloniki. He was ordained Deacon and Priest in July 1976 by His Eminence Panteleimon Metropolitan of Corinth and is a monk of the Holy Monastery of Stavronikita on Mount Athos. For six years from 1985 he served in the Orthodox Missions of Korea and then, for fourteen continuous years he took over the reigns of the Orthodox Mission of Western Bengal in India. There he developed great and worthy missionary, philanthropic and social activities. Unfortunately for his missionary work, he was dismissed from the country in June 2004 and in October of the same year was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Madagascar. He was consecrated on 14th November 2004 in Alexandria by His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. He Madagascar he undertook the rebuilding of churches and spiritual Centres, Schools, Philanthropic Institutions as well as the Theological Seminary which is already in operation. He shows special concern for the development of Priests and catechists. The operation of the Clinic was also reorganized by him, offering free care for the poor. He speaks English, Korean and Indian.
The Holy Archiocese of Madagascar was established by Patriarchal and Synodal Decree on 23rd September 1997 as Dicese of Madagascar and on 21th November by Patriarchal and Synodal Decree as Archdiocese. It includes in its jurisdiction Madagascar and the Islands of Mauritius, Reunion, Comores and Maillot.
