By the Grace of God, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa,
to the plenitude of the Apostolic and Patriarchal Throne of Alexandria,
Grace and Mercy and Peace from our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ,
born in Bethlehem and who fulfilled the Divine Economy.
“Christ is born, glorify Him! Christ descends from heaven, encounter Him!”
My beloved and blessed brethren and children in the Lord,
With these beautiful words, the hymnographer presents us with the great mystery of our Lord’s Birth. God the Word willed to be incarnated, without diminishing His divinity. The Son who is begotten of the Father before all ages receives human form. He becomes God and Man so as to approach man and lead him to redemption. This is why the Great God, the Invisible God, becomes a visible man. This great mystery holds a paradox- Christ’s two natures were united without confusion, without the one altering the other.
It is this God of love and humility that the hymnographer calls us to glorify. It is this God, that comes from the heavens, that he calls us to encounter. The shepherds and the magi encountered Him at the manger of Bethlehem and they worshiped Him.
Today, we may not have the possibility of encountering Him at that same manger, but we can perceive Him with our senses and with the soul He gave us and in which He dwells. It is in our hearts, in our whole existence, if this is pure as He created it, that we have, as the hymnographer says, definitely encountered Him. It is in our hearts, if they are full of the faith, compassion, love, understanding, self-denial, reconciliation, meekness, altruism, humility, that the newborn Lord dwells. It is with these virtues that He co-habits, because “God is love”.
Like other human characteristics, purity of the soul needs cultivation and development. This is why our Lord has given us His Church- the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. It is in Her that we fashion our soul, develop its purity, unite it with God and fellowman and give it the nourishment that it needs. It is in the embrace of the Church that we feel that we are children of the same Father, of God. The Living Church of the Lord makes us communicants of God and it is through Her that we encounter the Lord.
Beloved and blessed children of God,
During these Holy Days our Holy Churches, beautiful and solidly built, will receive thousands of faithful. Let us spare a thought for our brethren that are in need, for our missions in which our brethren offer of themselves day and night so as to save others from misery. Let us spare a thought for the thousands of African mangers in which the Lord is born today- for the hearts of young people that receive His Gospel. Let us offer them our love in which ever way possible. It is there that we will encounter Christ coming down from heaven.
My heartfelt prayer is that the Newborn Saviour protects you all and gives you all His rich mercy.

Par la grâce de Dieu Pape et Patriarche d’Alexandrie et de toute l’Afrique,
à tout le Peuple de l’Église Orthodoxe en Afrique, que soient avec vous la grâce,
paix et miséricorde de Jésus Christ, Dieu et Sauveur,
qui né à Bethléem et a confirmé la sainte providence.
« Christ naît, louez-le! Christ vient des cieux, allez à sa rencontre! »
Chers Frères, Fils et Filles bien-aimés en Christ,
C’est par ces jolis mots que le rédacteur de l’hymne nous décrit le grand mystère de la naissance du Seigneur. Le Dieu et Verbe a bien voulu prendre chair, mais cela n’a pas diminué sa déité. Le Fils qui a « résulté éternellement » du Père avant tout siècle prend une forme humaine et devient Dieu et Homme à la fois pour s’approcher de l’être humain et pour le mener vers son salut. C’est pour cette raison que Dieu le grand, Dieu l’invisible, devient un homme visible. Ce mystère constitue un paradoxe, puisque ces deux natures du Christ se sont réunies sans que l’une n’altère l’autre.
C’est ce Dieu d’amour et d’humilité que l’hymnographe nous invite à glorifier. C’est ce Dieu venu du ciel qu’il nous invite à rencontrer. Les bergers et les rois mages l’ont rencontré dans l’étable de Bethléem et se sont prosternés devant lui.
Quant à nous autres, à notre époque, nous ne pouvons pas le rencontrer dans l’étable ; mais nous percevons Dieu à travers nos sens et à travers notre âme, que Lui nous a donnée et dans laquelle il est présent.
Comme le dit l’hymnographe, nous avons certainement déjà rencontré Dieu dans notre âme, dans notre cœur et dans toute notre existence, ci ceux-ci sont purs tels qu’Il les a créés. C’est dans les cœurs pleins de foi, de miséricorde, d’amour, de compréhension, de sacrifice, de calme et sérénité, d’altruisme, de bonté et d’humilité que se trouve notre Dieu nouveau-né. C’est avec ces sentiments qu’Il coexiste, car « Dieu est amour ».
Or, comme toutes les autres qualités de l’être humain, la pureté de notre âme doit être cultivée et développée. C’est d’ailleurs pour cela que le Seigneur nous a confié Son Église, Une, Sainte, Catholique et Apostolique. Au sein de l’Église, nous donnons forme à notre cœur, nous développons notre pureté que nous unissons à Dieu ainsi qu’à notre prochain et nous l’alimentons de la nourriture divine dont il a besoin. Au sein de l´Église, nous sentons que nous sommes les enfants d’un même Père qui est Dieu. L’Église vivante de notre Seigneur nous réunit avec Dieu ; elle seule peut nous faire rencontrer le Seigneur.
Chers et bien-aimés enfants du Seigneur,
En ces saints jours, nos églises, qu’elles soient décorées ou en brique, recevront des milliers de fidèles. Consacrons nos pensées à nos frères africains qui souffrent ainsi qu’à nos missions dans lesquelles nos frères se dévouent jour et nuit pour sauver des vies de la misère. Consacrons nos pensées aux milliers de crèches africaines de notre époque, au sein desquelles le Seigneur naît tous les jours dans les cœurs de jeunes personnes qui reçoivent sa bonne parole. Donnons-leur, de chaque manière possible, tout notre amour. C’est là que nous rencontrerons le Christ venu du ciel.
De tout cœur, je prie pour que le Seigneur nouveau-né vous protège et vous accorde toute sa miséricorde.
