“Greeks have dignity and will continue the struggle so that our country can overcome the financial difficulties which it is facing”, said Theodoros II, Patriarch of Alexandria, who who conducted the Divine Liturgy at the historic Monastery of St George in Old Cairo.
The Alexandrian Primate expressed the wish that “Greece would overcome the present economic crisis” while at the same time stressing his gratitude to our country which has always assisted the ancient Patriarchate.
Having His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrosius of Kalavryta and Aigialia present, His Beatitude asked him to pass on the gratitude of the Second Throne Patriarchate also to the Church of Greece which always supports the missionary effort in Africa both with staff and material means.
Present at this great festival, which every year draws thousands of Greeks and Egyptians, Christians as well as Muslims, were Their Eminences Metropolitans Makarios of Kenya, Nicholas of Ermopolis, Dimitrios of Irinopolis, Ioakeim of Zambia, and His Grace Nikodimos of Nitria, Patriarchal Vicar in Cairo and His Grace Niphon, Bishop of Babylonos, Hegumen of the Monastery of St George.
Also present were the Charge d’ Affaires of the Greek Embassy Mr. Dimitrios Zevelakis, the Consul General of Greece in Cairo Mr. Gregory Vasilokonstantakis, the Consul General of Cyprus Mr. Haris Moritsis, the Chairman of the Hellenic Community of Cairo Mr. Christos Kavalis, the Chairman of the Arabic speaking Orthodox Community Mr. Robert Hosni and other dignitaries.
On 22ND April, during the Vespers for the Feast of the Great Martyr St George, His Beatitude awarded His Eminence Ambrosius of Kalavryta the Star of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
