On Sunday 21st October 2012, His Beatitude Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, amid much enthusiasm and piety inaugurated the Holy Church of St. Andrea in Kananga, together with His Eminence Nikiphoros Metropolitan of Central Africa and His Eminence Ignatios Metroplitan of Pentapolis.
During his address His Beatitude spoke of the vision of the late missionary Fr Hariton Pnevmatikakis for the building of a large Orthodox Church in the Kananga region, work which was begun in 2004 and completed in 2010 by His Eminence then Metropolitan Ignatios of Central Africa and now of Pentapolis. The costs of this enormous undertaking were covered in entirety by the “Protoklitos” Missionary Society of Patras.
Prior to the end of the Eucharistic Gathering, His Beatitude awarded honourary distinctions to the Chairman of the “Protoklitos” Missionary Society Mr. Nicholas Simos and to the civil engineer Mr. Pythagoras Manoliadis, as a reward of gratitude for their enormous contribution to the populous local Church of Central Africa.
